Outdoor Recreation is located on the West Beach side of Lake Tholocco, Fort Novosel. Lake Tholocco is a 676.8-acre lake that offers numerous recreational activities. Boating, skiing and swimming are favorite sports at the lake. Facilities include four fishing piers, beaches, pavilions, and clean restrooms. The West Beach swim area is a safe designated area where families can enjoy the lake. Swimming is only allowed when a lifeguard is present. Outdoor Recreation is EFMP Friendly!

Recreational Equipment Checkout

Please make sure to call ahead to make a reservation for your equipment!


  • Civilians must be sponsored by Active Duty Soldiers, Retired Military, DoD personnel, Veterans who were awarded to Purple Heart, Veterans who are former POWs, or Veterans classified by the VA as having a service-connected disability to rent from Outdoor Recreation (ODR)
  • Patrons must be 18 or older to rent from ODR
  • Equipment fees must be paid at the time of reservation
  • Over-the-phone reservations are accepted for those with a valid Visa or MC credit card
  • Payment fees will not be refunded without a 24-hrs notice of cancellation
  • All equipment reservations will be given a scheduled pick up and drop off time. If equipment is not dropped off by scheduled time, patron is subject to additional fees. 
  • Patrons will be held financially responsible for damaged/missing equipment up to item replacement cost
  • Any equipment scheduled for nightly rental must be picked up between 1500-1600 and dropped off by 1000
  • Patrons will be required to complete the Fort Novosel Boater Safety Course to utilize rental vessels
  • All boats must stay on Lake Tholocco except kayaks and canoes
  • Travel trailers can be delivered and set-up at Engineer Beach RV Park & Campground for an additional fee. Patrons must make their own reservation with Lake Lodging for the camp site
  • All off-post deliveries & set-ups must be with 10 miles of Fort Novosel Outdoor Recreation
Pavilion Checkout
  • Outdoor Recreation oversees picnic areas at Lake Tholocco (West & East Beach), Beaver Lake, and Buckhorn Lake. Patrons will need to reserve pavilion areas through Outdoor Recreation (Bldg 24235 Johnston Road), or call at +1 (334)255-4305.
  • Reservations are subjected to change due to inclement weather or military requirements.
  • Picnic areas are authorized for use on a first come-first served basis, unless reserved through the Outdoor Recreation Pro Shop. Reservations are confirmed only after receipt of appropriate fees, and are subject to cancellation restrictions.


Conditions of Use

  • Lake Tholocco (West & East Beach), Buckhorn Lake, and Beaver Lake are open from sunrise to sunset. To remain after dark, patrons must have written consent from Outdoor Recreation.
  • There is no recreational (boating, tubing or swimming) activity allowed on Lake Tholocco after sunset.
  • Patrons are responsible for keeping a rental sales receipt in their possession while utilizing rented pavilions.
  • Driving or parking on the grass is prohibited.
  • Pets are only allowed in the designated pet areas. Pets are not allowed on the beach, or in the swimming area, and must be kept on a leash at all times. You must clean up and dispose of any pet waste.
  • Loitering in the vehicle parking lot is not permitted.
  • Alcohol may not be consumed in the vehicle parking lot areas.
  • Glass is not allowed in any picnic area, park area, or vehicle parking area.
  • Music must be maintained at a respectful volume that does not interfere with other patrons in the area. Please play music that is appropriate in a Family environment.
  • Leaving children unattended at any Fort Novosel lake or picnic/park area will be governed by guidance in the Army Aviation Warfighting Center Regulation 608-6, Supervision of Children. (January 2007)
  • Patrons will be responsible for cleaning up the area used prior to leaving.



  • Patrons may cancel without financial penalty by giving a cancellation 24-hours prior to the reservation day.

Travel Trailers


  • Patrons are responsible for providing their own linens, personal toiletries, cooking/dining utensils, and propane.
  • Check with your vehicle’s insurance company prior to reserving a trailer for vehicle insurance coverage.
  •  Vehicle Towing Requirements
    • A frame mounted Class 4 rated receiver hitch.
    • A 7-prong adapter for trailer lights and brake hook up.
    • Vehicles must have trailer brake controller.
    • Wide side mirror are highly recommended.

Boat Rentals


  • In order to rent any ODR vessels, patrons must complete the ODR Boater Safety Card (which is free and can be obtained in the ODR office).
  • Patrons must be at least 18 to rent a ODR vessel
  • Patrons are responsible for gas reimbursement on ALL motorized boats.
  • For individuals that own their own vessels, you must obtain a boat launch pass.
  • What we have:
    • 14ft. Rhino Boat– seats 2, includes a trolling motor
    • 16ft. Bass Tracker– seats 2-3, includes a live well and trolling motor
    • Big Rhino– seats up to 6, fishing and recreational boat, includes a live well, 90 horsepower engine and trolling motor
    • Pontoon Recreational Boat– seats up to 8, 90 horsepower engine, recreational boat only (no fishing)
    • Pontoon Fishing Boat– seats up to 4, fishing boat only (no recreating), includes a live well
    • Ski Boat– seats up to 6 people, 115 horsepower engine
  • Payment fees will not be refunded without a 24-hrs notice of cancellation
